London IBS Irritable Bowel Syndrome Treatment.

Irritable Bowel Syndrome or IBS is a term used to describe a variety of symptoms which involve the large bowel. IBS is sometimes known as nervous bowel, spastic colitis or colon or mucous colitis. If you suspect or know you have IBS it is important to know that it is not a disease. IBS has no physical characteristics in that if you could examine your large intestine/bowel, you would see no physical abnormality. This is why it is often described as a “functional disorder” of the bowel, since it impedes the normal functioning of the bowel, but has no detectable physical appearance on inspection of the bowel or large intestine. This is one of the reasons that the medical profession is still mystified by IBS.
Hypnotherapy is recognised by the medical profession as an effective treatment for IBS and has proved itself to be a long term way of managing the symptoms for many patients. NICE (National Institute for Health & Clinical Excellence) guidelines for IBS permit GP’s to fund hypnosis as a treatment when a patient has previously tried 12 months of drug therapy without a satisfactory improvement.
“RECOMMENDATION: Referral for psychological interventions (cognitive behavioural therapy [CBT], hypnotherapy and/or psychological therapy) should be considered for people with IBS who do not respond to Pharmacological treatments after 12 months and who develop a continuing symptom profile (described as refractory IBS)” Irritable bowel syndrome: full guideline Page 465 of 554

Although much work is still to be done investigating the causes and cures for IBS, there is no doubt that stress is a contributing factor in the majority of cases. Hypnotherapy enables a patient to relax deeply and to reproduce that feeling of relaxation in their daily lives, helping to reduce symptoms. The use of metaphor and suggestion techniques with elements of NLP and cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) have produced very comforting results for the many people that suffer from IBS in Britain today.
The majority of the population suffer some of the symptoms of IBS at some point throughout their life, although it is thought that at any one time, around 15% of people in the Western world suffer the range of symptoms that would be diagnosed by a health professional as IBS. It is a complaint more prevalent in the younger generation and more likely in the female population. IBS is more common in the fast pace of the Western world and emotional stress is thought to be a major contributor. Sometimes IBS can emerge or flare after major changes happen in a person’s life. eg. change of job, partner, house, loss of a loved one.
